Appetizing

Garlic dumplini,
Filled with delicious goats' cheese,
Oh, how I love thee.

Mmmmm. Had them (yet again) at a restaurant in town (actually, it's sort of the sister restaurant to that infamously troublesome one across the road). Tasty goodness with cranberry salsa.

Lost and Found

Small emergency:
The tarantula escaped
Then safely was found.

I am still not entirely sure how she got out. My only concern was that she would be killed by someone freaking out, so I made everyone leave the room until I returned her to her home. As expected, she hadn't even left the table, but was just hidden among some papers. Poor little thing seemed more frightened than anything. I'll buy her some extra tasty crickets tomorrow!

Idol 20

So far this season
The finalists on Idol
Are not impressive.

There are a few that stand out as having potential, but as a group ... yeesh.

Through the Seeing Stone

Went to see a film:
The Spiderwick Chronicles.
Found it quite charming.

It was a while back that I read the books, and they're a quick and easy read, so I'm not entirely sure how closely the film stuck to them -- I'm quite sure some changes were made -- but it was quite enjoyable.

Visitation

Unexpectedly
A phonecall leads to dinner
And sparkling tea talk.

Out of the blue my dear friend Linda (currently residing in Ottawa) called up and the two of us went out for a most enjoyable dinner. Yahoo!

Post-Closing

Ask me and I'll say
I believe in miracles:
My voice made it through.

It's not in great shape, of course, but I made ith through the last of the shows without the audience catching on too much that it was in trouble. Given that it was on the verge of dying for pretty much the entire run, that's pretty impressive. Woohoo!

Closing Night

This is closing night,
And even though it's been fun
I'm glad it is done.

I need:
(a) a rest for my voice;
(b) a rest for my body; and
(c) to get things done in other areas of my life.

Time Post

Though it's after twelve
I haven't gone to sleep yet,
So it counts to me.

Yes, this is the FRIDAY post, timed back an hour to count as Friday's post. (I hope nobody notices that it's a painfully obvious way of dodging around the fact that I have nothing interesting to write about.)

McChick

My dear Drive-Thru girl,
You are endlessly chipper,
Which amuses me.

She sort of makes me laugh on the inside. The thing that REALLY amuses me is that her voice is extremely chipper and then you drive around and realize that the very chipper (and yes, the exact word here is chipper) voice comes from a relatively deadpan face. She's delightful and amusing, as a result.

Plea

"Make it through four more,"
Is my mantra to my voice.
"Grant me these four shows."

Today is the worst it's been yet and I'm concerned. (That's been an ongoing theme lately.) There's nothing to be done but to rest it when I can, go to bed early tonight, and hope for the best. Four shows. Four shows.

Spin Psycho II

The washing machine
Is an angry thrashing beast
In the spin cycle.

Seriously. I can hear it downstairs. That thing is going to spin itself right through the foundations one of these days, which explains the recent mini-flooding.

Undeniable

Grey at my temples
More noticeable these days.
Distinguished? I wish.

Someone's going to catch on to the fact that I'm actually getting old. Oh well...

Single Slipper

Slipper in the street.
Modern day Cinderella
Or drunken mishap?

I actually wonder about these things. Was someone putting out garbage when she accidentally stepped out of her slipper and somehow didn't notice even though it's the thick of winter? Hmmm.

Domestic Blitz

A disaster zone
Strewn with debris and clutter:
My house in chaos.

At some point, I need to do some serious catch-up on housekeeping.

Friday

Made it through Friday
So bring on the long weekend
'Cause I sure need it!

Ahhhh....

February 14th Wishes

Happy Valentine's
To all of you who read this
And to those you love.

There you have it.

I Don't Feel Like [Watching] Dancing

The little montage
Of dancing Idol hopefuls
Really has to stop.

Seriously. I hate it. "America, these are your top twelve guys/women!" and then we're subjected to each of them dancing like a moron in a moment that will no doubt make them the subject of mockery from friends and family. Why? Why?

And, for the record, how glad was I that they didn't put through that obnoxious sixteen year old twit who cried all night and then dismissed the band? But don't worry, there's still one guy in there that I want to smack up the side of the head (I think his name's Danny), so all's good, I suppose.

Spin Psycho

A bit annoying
When the hose from the washer
Comes out of the drain.

At least it did so at the very end of a cycle, meaning the basement floor was wet and puddly, but not flooded. That must be some crazy spin cycle! (And Misster Kitty will no doubt have some off-colour comment posted within the day...)

Winter Weather Report

Could this day have been
More ridiculously cold
With mind-numbing wind?

Oh yeah. That's why I hate winter...

This One's for Nan!

My Indian food,
Though tasty, was sadly not
From Mahal. Oh well.

Ah, Mahal! My favourite restaurant these days, with the melt-in-your-mouthingest butter chicken and slightly spicy palak paneer! I must return to you sometime soon!

Lazy Saturday

Spent the day at home.
You'd think I'd get more work done
But then you'd be wrong.

I spent the day sleeping in and resting my voice. I did some dishes, but I didn't really accomplish a whole lot otherwise. I guess I'll tackle laundry tomorrow. In the meantime, let's hope my voice holds out with the help of some Saving Grace.

Amazing Grace

"Singer's Saving Grace"
Truly is a wonder spray.
Voice in a bottle.

I was given a bottle of this product and thank goodness for it! Thanks to this tiny bottle of spray, I made it thought tonight's show without much noticeable going wrong with my voice, despite struggling vocally all day! Woohoo!

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Uh oh...

My exhausted voice
Showed signs of its strain tonight
Cracking at the last.

Oh well. It's a rock show. Just sing through. Send groovy voice vibes my way!

A Good Kick

I've become a fan
Of "Wincing the Night Away",
CD by The Shins.

This was one of those whim-purchases I made about a month ago, and I don't regret it. An excellent little CD. (If you want to watch an enjoyable little video -- of a song not actually from the aforementioned CD -- go to The Shins website, click "Media", then watch "Pink Bullets". Who wouldn't like a singing paper cow?)

My Morning Commute

My engine cut out
While exiting the highway.
More cash down the drain.

I'm sure it's all about pushing me over the edge when I'm already exhausted.

Meeting Places

A day in meetings
Meant that I could sleep in late.
One dull, one better.

The morning was spent in a meeting whose content could have been covered in about 30 minutes. The afternoon meeting was a bit more colourful and engaging. Still, that chance to sleep in ... Ahhhh!

Songwriting...

Working with Betsy
All night and making progress.
We'll get this done yet.

Seriously. I'm sure we'll get it done. Still, working with Betsy is, in her own words, an amazing and enjoyable experience. The pressure's on, though! Time is a-tickin' away!

Obnoxious

Tonight lines were crossed.
Audience climbed on stage then
Lay down in our paths.

Yes, a rather loud and rambunctious group didn't quite understand the nature of "interactive" theatre and made a nuisance of themselves. At the end of Time Warp they sprawled all around in our performance space, even ON TOP of one actor. To the one closest to me, I said, "I will step on your head in a moment if you don't move." They didn't return after intermission. Such a shame.

Opening Night

Crisis averted.
Vomiting did not occur
Though I feared it may.

Having been feeling unwell for most of the day and worrying that, due to the very physical nature of the role I'm playing, I might not be able to keep myself (and my excellent non-puking record) intact, I popped some Gravol before the show and, by about scene four or five, knew that the likelihood of an unfortunate guest-appearance by my stomach contents was virtually nil. Thank goodness!
